Bird Feeder Catcher

I like feeding and watching the birds but I dislike the mess and waste they make when they feed! And trust me, I am not a handyman/crafter in any way so this is an extremely easy project!!!
The regular old bird feeder works but when the birds get on they sling food around and I end up with wasted seed on the ground that sprouts things I don't want!! So I purchased this large platter at Big Lots and made a catcher. It was on summer clearance and was 1/2 price!! I also purchased a smaller plate to try but liked the overall diameter of this one better.
I had the drill bits and string/twine on hand. Placing the bird feeder in the middle of the plate I drilled a hole towards the end of the plate so I could attach my string.
Looped the string through the bird feeder. Fed the string through the hole in the plate and started tying knots at the end. I tied numerous knots so it wouldn't unravel.
Once everything was tied off I trimmed of the extra string. I'm sure there are better ways to do this, i.e. wire, chain, etc. but this is what I had on hand and just wanted to see if it would work. I believe this will help capture the flung off seeds and allow more birds to feed. It'll also (hopefully) help keep the seeds from sprouting on the ground!
The feeder is in a shaded area so I m not concerned about it getting too hot in the sun. The only concern would be during thunderstorms....it might blow over and topple the feeder but I'll keep an eye out for that. I do like that it's easy to clean when necessary.

I am still searching for the large plates but there are a lot of places to check.

Love this. I have a very big feeder which birds and squirrels both eat from, and the mess they make is amazing. I am redoing it soon and you gave me an idea. I have a small kiddie pool I was going to use for plants but I think I will turn it into a 'catcher' like yours. My feeder is on a 30" round base with a roof and mounted on a 4 x 4. I was going to put the pool at the base on the ground. But your idea is better.
