Large tiles or mosaic tile for fireplace surround?

I'm refacing an old 70's brick fireplace; covering the brick with backerboard and tile. ( I can't afford slabs of granite). I am building a painted white mantle with side columns in a shaker style. I like the look of mosaic or strips of tile for the area directly around the opening. (I dislike subway tile from "living" in the NYC subway), but a friend told me the mosaic and other "net"'backed tiles will make it look like a backspace. Any advice? The 15 x 15 tiles look too big!

Well Ellie, I absolutely LOVE the look of boho and a fireplace surround in boho style certainly would NOT look like a backspace or backsplash. Here is a link to show you what I mean:

So MY vote s for mosaic ... pattern and color of any type is more interesting and mood altering than a plain color, and in mosaic you can let your own style shine through in colors and dsigns that YOU like ;) OWN your home completely ;) Let it show who YOU are! You can buy smaller tiles , and odd tiles. Check out your local Tile shop, they may have a Deal!
Granite and Marble are so over rated and can be a pain to maintain. You could do both the large tile and mosaic combined, with the mosaic framing the Fireplace and the larger tiles on the outer part of the facia. This would look stunning with the Mantle You are building too it will be a one of a kind beauty!!

Have you looked at the faux stone. It is really lightweight; looks like real stone; easy to install.
It looks good in some settings, but it wouldn't go with the rest of my design. Though I'd like to try it someplace else in my house! Thanks for responding!
Depends on the style of your home. If it is a Craftsman- a period type tile would be great.
