The best way is to find a stud in the wall or use several screws with the brass supports and a wire. You can attach a wire on the back with eyelet screws. We have heavy oil paintings and this is the best way we have found to hang them safely.

I'm sorry, Joyce but what you describe is not a French cleat. A French cleat is two interlocking pieces of wood that could have a heavy object (like a heavy painting or headboard) fastened to it.
