Removing an Impossible Tangle

My littlest grand girl got herself in a hairy mess. She just turned five. She was visiting one night recently and disappeared into the bathroom. Never a good thing!

She loves her long hair.
She and her sister got something they called candy makeup. The sets include the lightest glitter gel possible plus lip gloss. They are allowed to play with this, but they can't wear it to school. Both have really gotten interested in their hair. But when Darling came out of the bathroom, this is what she showed me.
What in the world?
Darling had tried to put some curls in her hair, like when she is a flower girl at a wedding. Fortunately, she did not try to plug in my curling iron. But she tried to use the round brush. We use a flat brush in her hair normally.
Bad guy left; good guys right.
She didn't cry or get angry. She was very calm, especially for a five-year-old. But she brought me the supplies we needed: a fine comb, a flat brush, and Pantene detangler.
The brush is almost unremoveable.
Darling had gotten the hair brush twisted and wrapped by her hair two and a half times. Notice the supplies did not include mayonnaise or peanut butter because this was not gum or candy in her hair. Nor were their scissors. Mommy and Daddy were gone on a date night, but if there were any cutting to be done, it would be by them! Anyway, I started on the right trying with my fingers to find an easy loop of hair to loosen all the rest. It didn't exist. I used the fine comb to move any free hair to the front--there were very few. Then I sprayed the detangler all over the giant tangle. I used both hands to loosen tight loops of hair and sometimes pull one hair loose at a time. Darling never whimpered or complained or moved her head. I got lucky with one very blond strand. Since I could identify that section, I was able to move it over or under the tight strands that had the brush tied down. With that small strand free, there was a little more room to continue pulling the hair gently out from the tangle. Finally, the brush was free and all her hair.
Sexy and tousled is not her look.
Time now for LOTS more detangler with the flat brush and comb. For the first time ever, little Darling didn't whine while getting her hair brushed. She was a trouper throughout the solid hour it took to fix the tangle. But nothing was cut, oiled, frozen or left behind.

All back to normal.
She was so happy with the results. Me, too. Best wishes to you 😇

Suggested materials:
  • A flat brush, a fine comb, Pantene detangler; the round brush was hidden.   (I already had everything.)
