A clean, stiff paint brush works to get dust out of pleated lamp shades or accordian style lamp shades. Work from the top and slowly make your way down by turning the shade as you go.
In the lighting section of home good stores, and probably dollar stores, there is a nifty little pillow shaped tool that cleans lamp shades. It maybe a dollar, or two, and the material its made out of gets the dust off, and there is a cleansing powder inside that is released when you use it that gets spots and yellowing off. I can't remember the name, but they are great!
I use a lint roller with peel-off sticky sheets. I roll it down the surface of the shade, and it removes, dust, pet hair, etc without damaging the shade at all.
Use a rubber glove, like the kind you wash dishes with. Just rub it up and down on the shade and it will get lint, hair and dust off. I learned this from a person that details cars and he uses rubber gloves to clean off the velour or fabric seats.

If the shades are smooth use a lint roller otherwise vacuum them

I always use a lint roller and it amazes me how much dust it picks up.
I would either vacuum or use lint roller first, then use one of the white magic foam blocks to remove any marks.

If its dusty, I use the vacuum hose and brush attachment and just run it up and down as I turn the lamp. Works great even if you have a pleated shade.
Paint brush for pleated shades and hands down, lint roller for others!
