First you need to pick up the wood! Head to a local HomeDepot and they will cut it to size for you!

Measurements:
   - Two 4" posts 55 inches tall
   -  Five 1 by 6" boards 60" long
Next, sand and wipe down the wood to prep it for the stain of your choice!
For more of a rustic feel I use several different stains. It shows more depth in the wood to make it look aged.
After the stain dries, I use a semi-gloss polyurethane. I like using the semi-gloss on rustic projects, it steals the wood without taking away the worn look!
Next, I measure and place my boards on the back of the posts and screw them in!
I also attached a board on the top to act as a shelf!
And there it is! You're new rustic headboard!

    Awesome job!

    Question:

Just wondering if you hit your head on the shelf on top when sitting in bed reading, etc.. The boards seem sunkin in, so doesn't your head get pressed against the shelf when in the upright position?

It looks high enough that it shouldn't be a problem.

Is this measured for a king size bed?

Ok, you're going to sand & paint --- why not use used lumber? Makes sense to me

I just bought an oak dresser and I have been trying to find an oak bed. This looks so simple I think I will try it. Probably would be cheaper too.
