I could not resist that end table that I found at Goodwill recently for just $10. I was in great condition - very sturdy and well made, but the top had lots of scratches. It just needed some love...
The top was scratched up, legs were sturdy, it had lots of worn areas on the top, and I could tell the wood underneath looked pretty good and I could tell it was pine (not an expensive wood, but still wood).
Normally, I would have sanded the top first, but for some reason I painted the legs first. I used Waverly brand chalk paint that I purchased at Walmart in the craft department. Just did a light coat for the first coat and then sanded the legs a bit.
Next, I sanded the top down, it sanded down nicely and took about 20 - 30 minutes to get all of it off.
It has a nice pine wood grain underneath, just as I suspected. I loved the wood grain and knew I wanted to refinish the top.
Applied two coats of Restor-A-Finish on the top, using steel wool to lightly sand in between each coat.
Then I added a top coat of polyurethane...used steel wool to lightly sand and then applied another coat. You want it to feel smooth when you run your hand across the top.
I dry-brushed a light gray coat of paint on the legs over the white and lightly sanded for the finished, updated look I was going for.

yep..i am lazy..a sanding foam block..and wipe off...looks good as you did "thorough" job..

I love that you saved the wood, it is beautiful now. I noticed the Varathane 3x. How did you like using it? The reviews aren't great but I question if those users know how to lay on a thick coat and let it level itself. Did you have a problem with brush strokes? It would be nice to skip 3 or 4 coats of finish every time.
The table looks two-tone. Is that the wood or did you do something I missed in your descriptio? Looks great!
What is dry brushing..that you put on the legs of the table ?
