What to do? What to do?

Julie Moyna

Hubby came home with this buggy and didn't realize until researching that it's broken...I am dying to break it down and salvage all but the hideous ribbon threaded thru it. Come on and inspire me with any ideas you have. I absolutely have to make a lamp with one of the wheels. Any other ideas? Thank you in advance!
Look at those wheels!
Help! I need to deconstruct and up cycle!

  • Personally I would restore this stroller. You can always purchase wheels and items that can be made into other objects. This is a real gem and may be worth much more if properly restored. It would be a shame to take such a great piece apart.

I too would restore it, would love to have it. Would put a miniature horse to it and go for rides around the farm. Please don't take it apart.

@Dolores Yeah, I would NOT break this wonderful antique down! Who knows you could very well get on Antiques Roadshow with it! Patina girl patina! It has a wonderful age and grace to it! I'd actually get an old Raggedy Ann doll or two or three of various sizes and just make a statement of décor out of it. I'm a hopeless romantic and over the years I've lost through other family members some really nice pieces I could kill for now. But life happens. I wouldn't mess with it, just lightly clean it. Good luck, keep us posted!

I would take all the foofie stuff off and literally make a garden planter out of it. Wouldn't that be adorable right by the front door?
  • The wheels would be beautiful in a foyer table similar to my bicycle wheel table.
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Feb 20, 2014
I too would re-purpose it! I would just clean it up and then redo all the fabric on it. Then just clean it up...but not too much. It would make a great blanket pillow holder for a guest room or even to use every day in the master suite. Or you could put it in the den to hold all those throws and things the kids have to have in there.
  • Nikki Nikki on Feb 20, 2014
I think it would even be a cute end table if you took off the rails on the top and the fabric etc..I think there are a lot of neat thing you could probably do with this, I can't wait to see what you decide =)
  • Valerie Valerie on Feb 20, 2014
I would keep it pretty much the way it is - it is way too nice to repurpose. What about getting a valuation from one of your local dealers and reselling it. Alternatively, if you have a porch, this might be a perfect addition, perhaps with the addition of a flower pot (just make sure that you have a suitable drip-tray so as to prevent any damage to the fabric). It is gorgeous just the way it is!
  • Korie Nordstrom Korie Nordstrom on Feb 20, 2014
I am a photographer and I can tell you that other photogs would pay top $ for that to use as a prop. You could recover the material into a linen or something versatile, strengthen all the parts and resell it!
  • Sheree Hughes-Irwin Sheree Hughes-Irwin on Feb 20, 2014
Took mine to Antiques Roadshow.....mine from the 1920s ....and wicker. Not worth much as doll carriage, maybe $50 and another person had an older one.....same thing. Do what you wish with it. Restore is always an option but update it to get rid of the ribbon, lol. I also have wagon wheel lamps, yes, that would be fun. Or wheel off an hung on a wall. The spokes from the back and sides would make frames form antique photos. Have fun!
    • Julie Moyna Julie Moyna on Feb 20, 2014
LOL...why you don't like old dull silk ribbon? Thank you for the support and info. I do like the idea with a few upcycled adds like the belt as told below...Its definitely hard to decide...once apart, there's really no going back...LOL! Thanks!
  • Connie Smith Connie Smith on Feb 20, 2014
I would keep it as is and make it in to a Santa sleigh. It would be beautiful with packages wrapped, with a burlap bag full of some old toys... Maybe on the front porch or if your home is large enough next to your tree.. I would NOT put it outside.. Only on a covered porch.. You take a chance of it being broken down by the in-climate weather... It is beautiful as is...
  • Rosemary Kelly Rosemary Kelly on Feb 20, 2014
I'd restore it. It's gorgeous! Any bike store will give you old rims, usually free.
  • Brooke Brooke on Feb 20, 2014
I would not take it apart. I would get rid of the fabric and strengthen it ,make it sturdy. If you have a sheltered porch put it by the door and put pots of flowers in it and change it out as the seasons change. I wouldn't be afraid to paint it either. Antiqued of course. Please don't dismantle it.
    • Judy Cunningham Burnett Judy Cunningham Burnett on Mar 01, 2014
@Brooke I like this idea! I think it would be a shame to break it down and loose the beauty of the era. I would also change the fabric and get rid of that particular ribbon. google it to get ideas as to how the original would look and go that way with it.
  • Kacy Kacy on Feb 20, 2014
@Julie Moyna , as a photographer, I would LOVE to have this as a piece to my collection of props. It really is a beauty! However, I do understand you wanting to do something else with it.
    • Julie Moyna Julie Moyna on Feb 20, 2014
@kacy, well come rent it! Lol. I have so many items local photogs rent/borrow. That's a great idea except its kind of big...it is taking up 1/4 of my front room.
  • JoAnn JoAnn on Feb 20, 2014
I agree with Woodbridge Environmental! This a real gem there are not many of these left, I would get expert advise before cleaning it as you may ruin the value of it. If it is not something that goes with your decor I would put it in an antique store for someone to fall in love with and that will pass it on to the next generation.

@Julie Moyna I also have one that would not sell in my shop although mine is wicker and in mint condition. I am going to take the advice of Brooke and use mine as a planter on my front porch.

Keep the blue silk padding for the seat...Replace the yellow & blue on the sides with old, distressed leather belts woven bet. wooden spokes & then add a few darker & lighter blue pillows.
  • Julie Moyna Julie Moyna on Feb 20, 2014
Thanks Kaye! I love the idea with the belts!
  • Chris Peterman Chris Peterman on Feb 20, 2014
That is a cool peice & I wouldn't break it up, but I'm more of a purest. I'd definitely take the ribbons off, find a woodcrafter & get the bumper replaced if u want, clean it up real good with soap & water, & replace the cushion material. Then I'd put it in my living room or bedroom & use it as a piece of furniture to sit on or .... maybe even mount a lamp on it somewhere unique. It'd make a great bedside or side table next to a chair. There is so much u can do with this without breaking it down. love it.
  • Dolores Dolores on Feb 21, 2014
So pleased that you have decided to keep it, just tidy it up a bit, I think you are still going to have lot of fun with it. Good luck and you keep me posted.
  • Kacy Kacy on Mar 01, 2014
Sure, I would love to fly to Santa Clarita, CA to rent that beautiful carriage. :) Enjoy no matter your decision on how to use it. I am sure you will come up with something good!
  • Georgia Lyman Georgia Lyman on Mar 01, 2014
Since I have a doll collection, they would go in the buggy
  • Darlene Clonts Darlene Clonts on Mar 01, 2014
Fix it up for a kitty bed
    • Judy Cunningham Burnett Judy Cunningham Burnett on Mar 01, 2014
@Darlene Clonts I would be afraid cats would use it as a scratching post. Doll would be good, but so would the idea of using it as a side table with lamp and magazines as well as a place special for coffee or tea. Leather straps and sturdy distressed wood too.
  • Judy Martin Judy Martin on Mar 02, 2014
just pack it up & sent it to me !! I love old things & I will fix it up and Keep the look & make IT Look Special... I would remove the ribbon & add Better seating on it to look fuller ...but keep the old look I love this! how much?

Can you imagine the size of that box. I have decided to sell locally...unless you'd like to make an offer...:)
  • N J Gross N J Gross on Mar 02, 2014
This is so beautiful and it would be a shame to break it down. If I had it, I would put it on the front porch and decorate it with plants for each season.
  • Patty Morgan Patty Morgan on Mar 02, 2014
Spring is in the air. It would look nice if you could put a box on top and fill it with herbs or flowers. The wear of the out doors would give a more rustic look too.
  • Patty Morgan Patty Morgan on Mar 02, 2014
I just read the other comments and if it is worth money don't put it in your garden. I would only do this if it was falling apart and you wanted to give it a new home. The water and sun will put wear on the wood.
  • Bev Knight Woodley Bev Knight Woodley on Jun 06, 2014
That is an awesome buggy !!! I'd leave it exactly like it is & maybe set a Boston Fern in it for display

BTW, please don't try to repair or restore this piece yourself. Sometimes (mostly) things are worth more in their original condition. I did not at first realise that the wheels and the whole thing are made from wood. It is just beautiful. A professional restorer would be the way to go rather than DIY and even then it could be worth more as it is without touching anything. I would love to know the history and it's own story behind this beautiful piece.
  • Nancy Sportello Nancy Sportello on Jun 07, 2014
I would fill with flowers and place on the lawn.
  • Penny Kunkel Penny Kunkel on Jun 07, 2014
It could be worth $ so I wouldn't do anything to it until you did some research , It's a cool piece of history either way
  • Shari Veater Shari Veater on Jun 07, 2014
That is TRULY a great find! I would repair it and maybe take off the material and use outside for s "seasonal" decoration...pumpkins and scarecrows with bright red and orange mums in the Fall...ideas are endless!
  • Lora (Howard) Cotton Lora (Howard) Cotton on Jun 08, 2014
I wouldn't "scrap out" any of it - EXCEPT that hideous ribbon. It's still a beautiful piece, and I believe would hold more value if you didn't break it apart.
  • Tegma Tegma on Jun 08, 2014
I'd check with an antique dealer about it's worth before even touching it. I wish I could make a find like that. Broken or not, I think it's a collector's item! Do some research on it, please!
  • Diane Arnold Diane Arnold on Jun 09, 2014
Just please don't make a lamp out of one of those wheels. 😊 Have it appraised.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Jun 11, 2014

It would take all material off leave it as is and make it a flower cart. Put it in the front yard. It would be adorable. I have a neighbor that has a small wagon and they flowers and plants on it.
  • Anna Ibarra Anna Ibarra on Feb 18, 2015
Don't dismantle it. Just a beauty.
  • Carol Carol on Jun 09, 2015
Broken or not it is a great find. See if you ban find pictures of it on line to help in your restoration. Check area craftsmen to see if they can make replacement parts for the broken pieces. If it not restorable, you can always use it for antique dolls or put it out in the garden with plants. I also think it might be a child's wheelchair. I'm thinking that because of the high wheels and what appears to be cloth straps for tying someone in. Before dismantling it, do a bit of research to find out what it is and if it is worth repairing. It is a great find.
  • Deb Laber Deb Laber on Jul 20, 2015
Broken can be fixed! Especially if you have all the parts. Don't dismantle without talking to a professional. I love it just the way it is!
  • Meli Meli on Mar 26, 2016
It would be an utter sin to take this apart and repurpose parts of it. It's an antique - why would you want to destroy it?
