What is on the now,paint ,stain? What condition are they in?
It is not clear what exactly you mean by "re-do" - remodel, update the look, or resurface? If you could post a couple of pictures of your stairs and stairwell other Hometalkers would be able to give you a more thorough answer to your question.
You could use the luxury vinyl planks if your covering the basic wood.
We removed the old carpet and it's just the plain wood, no stain or anything.

Chances are if the stairs were built with carpeting, the wood is not of a quality grade to be refinished, but rather underlayment grade. Look into overlay stair planks.
