Hello Mary! Here is a link that provides information on what to do to eliminate urin smell from carpeting. Of course if the animals continue to urinate on the carpeting, the urin smell will obviously return and continue to linger.

The urine odor requires a pet enzyme cleaner. I prefer the tablets you mix in warm water, much stronger, and why pay for water.... https://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Galaxy-Stain-Eliminator-Fizzion/dp/B019YMYNR0/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1504290496&sr=8-24&keywords=jackson+galaxy
I put the tablets in my carpet cleaner water reservoir with warm water, so easy.
You could get a spray as a follow up between shampoos, they even have it at the Dollar Tree.
If the carpet is totally trashed, I would remove it and put a covering easier to maintain.
I would also make sure each old dog has a large bed with removable cover you can wash regularly, and put the inside material in a big plastic bag to keep from contaminating it. One of those frebreeze air effects deodorizers plug ins helps and the pump spray bottle in the room air helps daily.

Ophs and get the blacklight flashlight when you order also, urine floresces bright limey green, you will find all the spots, better odor control.

You need to find an enzyme based cleaner ment for pets. Natures miracle is one, there are others. There is also a cleaning product called odo ban. You need to use enough cleaner to get thru the carpet to the actual floor. Wood, concrete are both pouris and can hang on to smells.

Very hard when our little love ones get old....Plain white vinegar is supposed to cut the odor (of course you smell the vinegar) but it keeps them from coming back to the same spot.

This may be worth trying: hydrogen peroxide, dish detergent and baking soda. Here are the details: http://www.diyncrafts.com/3019/home/effective-diy-method-for-removing-urine-stains-and-smell-recipe ; Good luck!

If you have tried an enzyme product for dog pee, had a commercial rug shampooer out and it still smells, the urine has most likely soaked through the carpet into the pad and possibly the floor. If this is the case, rip all the carpet up and put down new. In the mean time, cage your dogs.

I too have a senior dog who l
Pees on the floor except she does it down the basement on the concrete floor. I keep a garden sprayer filled with natures miracle so once cleaned i can soak it down real well. Works great. It's important to get it all the way through the carpet and the pad so soak it really well and let it dry. If you're not sure where all the pee spots are use a black light in the dark. The spots will show and you can soak them down. Good luck
