Is sanding necessary when spray painting metal fixtures?

If the fixtures are peeling/shedding you must sand

I always sand with 220 grit, I have done several bathroom light fixtures and have great results with I sand. Good luck!!

If the fixtures are shiny/slick the paint will not stick if you don't rough it up with a light sanding

I have painted outdated shiny brass ceiling light fixtures and a brass ceiling fan. I couldn't use spray paint due to the designs, therefore, I used inexpensive craft paint (the kind in small bottles about $2.00 each). I used cheap paint as I knew the items I painted were out of hand's reach so would not receive normal daily wear and use like a faucet. The paint does not cling well at first .... BUT if you sort of "dab on" that first coat, the second and third coat stay on nicely. My ceiling fan and fixtures were painted 15 years ago and still look fine.

However, I have never painted a faucet BUT would definitely lightly sand with a VERY fine sandpaper to avoid scratching the metal as it may show through the finished paint job.

I've noticed that Rustoleum have paints for every purpose, it seems, just be sure to pick the right one for the job. If you have any doubts, be sure to ask a clerk for advice.

I spray painted my outdoor fixtures with Rustoleum hammered metal in black and the only thing I did for prep was to clean them really good. They have held up for 8 years And still look great.
