Make your own rustic fall sign (no stencil or cricut needed!). With leftover scrap wood, a printer and a paint pen, I made this easy gather fall sign to hang in my kitchen. A quick afternoon DIY to welcome the fall season! Total time for the project was about four hours, including drying time. Without the drying time for the stain, you can do this project in about an hour or less.
To get started, either purchase piece of raw wood, or use a scrap piece of wood. Mine was 16x12. I lightly sanded and used wood conditioner before I added stain (following the directions on the can).
I used a foam brush to wipe on a coat of Minwax stain in dark walnut. I let it sit for about five minutes and then wiped excess with a paper towel. After drying, I added one coat of polycrylic and let dry.
Once dry, I brought the wood inside and laid on a flat surface (my dining room table). I placed the gather printout over the wood and taped down. For the gather print, I created it quickly in Canva (an online free photo tool) and printed on 11x17. You can download the template I used on my blog. I used a ball point pen and pressing hard, I traced the letters and twig twice.
It's a little hard to see in this photo, but the tracing will leave an imprint of the letters on the wood. Next, use a paint pen (I used white) to trace and fill in the letters and design. I went over the design about three times to get the coverage I wanted.
Once dry, I used 3M picture hangers to hang on the tile above our stove. I love using this space for seasonal decor. The wood sign is perfect for fall!
