Rusr-Oleum Tile Paint Kit or Giani Tile Paint Kit.
Go to the sherwin Williams site. They give a lot of info on painting ceramic tile.
Paint it using the 2 part epoxy paint kits that they have for bathtubs. I've done this a couple of times and it's extremely durable finish. I have a floor that I did over 20 years ago and it's still beautiful.
I have done this with great success. Be sure the tile is clean. The key is to use a good quality primer and exterior paint.
i am venturing a guess that the tiles made in 1968 probably have LEAD PAINT most paint made before 1978 do. that's when government stepped in and decided it was bad for our health. please don't scrape it or damage it until you have your local health department check it for lead. a lead kit from Walmart is an option too...but regardless, adding chemicals may or may not have a chemical reaction. once you know exactly what your dealing with it's easy. contain it, cover it, paint or epoxy it but as a last resort replace it. $ wise i mean. to replace it you will need a lead certified contractor to do so. lead has no smell, and the dust it can create is extremely bad for your health. a floor paint from your local SHERWIN WILLIAMS may be a best bet..ask them...please!
Epoxy 2-part tub and tile kit.
an alternative like my tiled bathroom floor with finish warn off, get tiny sponges, feathers, feather duster. Mix collection of accent colors and dab, sprinkle, swirl, drissle randomly.. Finish with 3 to 4 high gloss minwax clearcoat to lock it all in and seal. Gloss will dull over time, but so what. One coat of semi will fix that later.
an alternative like my tiled bath
Agree with Dhachey above. Use a two part epoxy kit for beautiful and long lasting results. That is what the pros use.....http://www.livelovediy.com/2013/02/how-to-paint-tile-and-update-your.html
Take this photo to the flooring department of your home improvement store and let their paint pro show you the correct paint for this type of tile. You can also look at decorator books for a floor style you like and take this with you --- you can stencil it, "marbelize" it, paint stripes, or just make it solid.
Yes, use a good epoxy paint and prep well.
I would be tempted to take out the tile altogether and use stained concrete that would look textured. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYYzOZin0n1/ or https://www.concretecountertopsolutions.com/?source=adwords&adnetwork=g&adtag1=&adcreative=204146446053&adposition=1t3&admatchtype=b&adkeyword=diy%20concrete%20countertops&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5r3Wr-aQ1gIVikwNCh1XmgyiEAAYAyAAEgKjMPD_BwE
Love all the wonderful responses.
You can, however I would use an epoxy paint. Regular paint will not stand up to the conditions.
Taste is funny. I kinda like the tile. It looks a lot like granite. I think I'd leave the countertops the way they are and maybe only change the backsplash area.
All in all, you kitchen is cute.
Two-part epoxy, these folks make lots of specialty finishes.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw2TXNgOrxM
There are companies that can reglaze your file any color you want. It's quick and affordable. Just Google them.
Personally I really like your ceramic tile (But then I don't see it on a daily basis). Best of luck Lois.
I like your counter tops, I would just add a diamond pressed copper tin backsplash behind your range top, it wold look great !
i'd check out unicorn spit paint, watch some of her paint idea videos, she does some amazing paint jobs

This stuff works great with no real odor. Then you can paint it with whatever you want. I just would not do a finish paint in a high gloss.
Look in Hometalk DIY for "I stenciled my bathroom tile floor!" They give photos and details on priming and painting ceramic tile. Good luck!
