Pine cone wreaths combine bright colors, personal taste, nature, and decoration to brighten the home. They can be adapted to any season of the year. There are two ways to make them, permanent or change with the seasons. The permanent wreaths are glued with hot glue. The cones on the changeable wreaths can be rotated for each season or holiday by wiring and un-wiring to use new seasonal cones.
First you will need to gather at least 10 pine cones. My cones come from a tree in a park that fall onto the public street and sidewalk. I keep a tub and grocery bag to gather and store the cones.
You will also need a vine wreath, cutters, wire or hot glue gun, and possibly a hand cutting tool. Small wire is needed for changing the wreath for seasons and hanging the wreath. Hot glue is for a permanent wreath. I had the tools on hand. Use safety glasses when cutting cones.
Cut each cone in 2 or 3 pieces. You will cut 3 sizes to add variety. I usually use 3 or 4 colors. Spray paint the cones. I lay mine on an old catalog on a card board box in the yard. You need good ventilation when using spray paint. The cones soak up the paint. Let them dry and paint them at least once more. Dot the centers with white or yellow to give them a "flower face."
After the sprayed cones are dry, wire them to the vine wreath or permanently glue them. For the temporary wreath, you only need new cones and a storage bag for each season. I keep all mine in a clear tub so I can see what is in the tub.
I arrange the cones so they are varied all over the wreath. Use some of the wire or use a garbage bag tie to make a hanging wire at the top of the wreath. They also make wonderful gifts and can be personalized in color and flavor of the receiver.
Hang them indoors or outside on a door or window. Nothing says I love you like a home made gift.
