You sure can. Here is a link to Hometalkers who have done this - http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=paint%20tile, maybe one of them will be what you are looking for.
Beautiful room! Look into chalk paint!
They also make this stuff called pebble tile that can go right over your existing tile:

OR Just add a bit of wooden quarter round, paint it whatever color wanted, to go around fireplace, or just add it to the top of fireplace. could layer it, 2 or 3 above only. Have some fun with what have, or could paint the quarter round that is there, whichever color want. It would really accent nicely.
Don't paint the tile it is pretty and matches the fireplace. Move your red pieces over to the top of fire place. I have thought of buying that rug so many times I also liked it in cream and taupe
I used chalk paint to cover white porcelain tiles, the used the same brand wax on my family room fireplace and liked it so much I painted over marble tiles in my living room fireplace and again waxed. Looks very professional!
I used rustolium Tub and tile. only 2 colors White and off white. But held great in vanity and shower... Smells terrible but covered great.
Hi Sally, yes you can. It's best to use paint made specifically for tiles, which most hardware store should sell. Prep the tiles really well before painting. Here’s a great video that will show you how to paint bathroom tiles.- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYkCuIAJca8&t=114s
