One of the first things is get rid of anything that is holding water that does not have a current to it, like a pump on a water feature that keeps water moving. The larvae needs still water. Clean out any bird baths every couple of days. They love to hide in shady spots, like under garden plants during the day when the sun is out. It is murder sometimes in my veggie garden. Bug zappers that you hang up will help a little, too. Plant the plants they don't like, I use citronella geraniums myself. They are put off by the citrusy smells.

I too have huge mature trees in both the front and back yards, as well as all neighbors do too. There is no reason to remove trees just because they shade your lawn and house. The only sunny spot in our yard is on top of the second steep tier in the back yard where I have my veggie garden. Between my citronella geraniums on the end tables out front, citronella candles and tiki torches, we can sit in front on our seating area into the evening without being bothered too much. Don't even consider removing your mature maple. Ours in the front is probably close to five feet across, not around. I will not remove it unless It needs to be removed for safety reasons.

I don't have any window boxes. I just have a huge maple tree that shades the front of my house. I don't get a lot of sunshine.

Plant lemon grass around the areas you use most. If you use the porch and there is a window near by, have a fan blowing out at the area. Best thing is prevention. Dump any standing water and keep the grass mown.
