***drumroll, please***
Ladies and gentlemen, this table cost me FIVE DOLLARS. For a table that was structurally sound, I thought it was a pretty good steal!
But here’s the thing. It looked great from a distance, but not so much up close…
The old paint was peeling in corners, and whoever painted it didn’t even do a great job because the finish was lacking full coverage in a lot of places. And I’m not sure what paint that person used, but it literally peeled off in one layer to reveal a chalky, also poorly-painted white surface underneath. So after I peeled away the weird paint layer, I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do to it. I knew I wanted to keep it white, but plain white was too simple. I decided to paint the whole surface brown. I used a mix of paints to create this color but the All-in-One paint in Driftwood would’ve been a really pretty choice too!
In order to play up the design a little, I decided to use Texture Powder with the same color paint in order to stencil a damask pattern onto the sides of the table. Just mix a 1:1 ratio of paint to powder, apply the paste to a stencil, remove and wash the stencil!
After the stenciling dried, I went over the entire surface with a liberal layer of Crackle Medium. It does give your painted a shiny finish, but not to worry, it won’t matter once you get your topcoat on. Then I applied several layers of Vanilla Frosting, my favorite white in the world! Be sure to apply it in completely random strokes in order to get the best crackle effect(none of that “apply in the direction of the grain” nonsense!). If you do apply the paint in the direction of the grain, you’ll get smaller, parallel cracks, and it just won’t look as authentic. You’ll have cracks everywhere there is a layer of Crackle Medium and personally, that wasn’t my style. I hated it. But I applied more layers of paint in some areas to cover up most of the cracks, and you end up with a cool authentic-looking finish like this!
Then, I lightly sanded down the paint that covered the stenciled texture. Not too much, just enough to bring out the details and allow that brown to peek through. I used 120-grit sandpaper.
Lastly, I went over the table with two layers of Tough Coat! The second layer was applied an hour after the first. I went with the Tough Coat because a coffee table, by nature, is going to face a lot of touching, from tableware and spills, to decor and grubby hands that belong to itty bitty visitors!
Here is a close-up of the detail on the table. Doesn’t it look much better than a plain white surface?
And here is the finished product! I don’t think I can part with this one…

I have the same coffee table! It belonged to my Mother and some of the veneer on the sides is coming off. I've been looking for something to do with it to refresh it and nothing has inspired me...this is it!!! I love this and I think my Ma would have loved it too. She thought I could do anything I set my mind on...well Imma gonna do this. Thank you so very, very much! Now to find the time.
