Does anyone know what kind of tree this is?

The tree seems to have two different types of leaves, one that resembles an apple tree leaf when they are immature. The mature leaf looks more like a mulberry. The red fruit is ripe as the pulp squ out when I pressed the fruit between my fingers. If you can identify it, can you also tell me if the fruit is safe for human consumption?
The leaves nearer the fruit look more like an apple tree.
The leaves toward the end of the branch look more like a mulberry.

It looks to be a Crab Apple tree. In the Spring it should have groupings of small white flowers that have about 5 or 6 pedals and pale yellow center.

Thank you, but no, I have holly growing nearby and there's a difference between them.

I don't think it's a crab apple. Fruit is too small -- crab apples are larger. I think it's a chokecherry. Take a cutting to your local nursery or agricultural office -- they're the best source for answers on the plants in your area.

They look more like some kind of cherry fruit, not a crab apple fruit. The are not solid color, like cherry fruit. I pick up at least a dozen crab apples from my driveway from my neighbors tree over the fence and my garage.

Is the picture upside down or is that how they grow?

  • Margaret Margaret on Sep 12, 2017

It looks like the picture was taken from below and then turned up side down. It could be a choke cherry. was there any new foliage that came out purple or do I have that backwards, new growth green, old growth purpleish leaves. The purple / green leaves are ornamental cherry, I think.

No, the leaves always stay green. Also, you're right about the photos being up side down. I don't know what happened, I've never had them flip like that before. I was hoping it was a choke cherry, but we got it as bare root stock from my husbands employer for Arbor Day and the package said it was some kind of dog wood. Do they fruit? Also, aren't choke cherries darker colored when ripe?

Some dogwoods do have fruit and they look like small red berries. If they have fruit they should flower at some time in the year. Hollys would have very insignifigent flowers and dogwoods would be more showy.
