Living Room Makeover

Loretta
by Loretta
Removed the old carpet and replaced with wood. Wondering if I haven't over done the makeover. Do I need to declutter? I like it but...what does someone else think?

I think it looks lovely Loretta. I wouldn't change a thing.

The only thing I would do would be to move the chair slightly closer to the door and move the bookcase down a little...then put in a larger area rug to tie everything together. Make the rug at least large enough to sit the front legs of the chairs and sofa on it. This holds it in place. A patterned rug would work. I love your floor! and your colors!

I agree with Jeanette S. It still looks great.

To update the look you could remove the valance on the picture window, remove all artificial flowers, remove plastic wrapper from lamp shades and add blue pillows to the couch. (Make pillow covers for the pillows already there.)

Take the plastic off your lamp shades and get rid of fussy drapes. Perhaps just the sheers would be enough. It would lighten it up a lot!

Nancy is right - too many artificial flowers!

Maybe change the wall color to a dark beige, paint the china cabinet in a cream color, along with the suggestions above. If is in the budget change to a different color curtain but keep it a solid if you get a rug with a bold print. Just my thoughts.

Here's my 2 cents...THE LIVING ROOM...Yes, it is cluttered, too much furniture & needs an edit. 1st ~ Take down or out the artificial flowers, doll display, flowered chair, curtains, artwork & pictures in both the living room & dining room. Paint all of it a pale gray, then paint doors & trim a bright white. Replace artwork on walls w/ bright colored designs in groupings of 3 or 5 gallery style. 2nd ~ Replace the curtains for white sheers. 3rd ~ Reupholster the 2 wingback chairs in a bright jewel tone patchwork design, Reupholster the couch in a charcoal gray & add brightly colored throw pillows.. 4th ~ Replace the coffee table for 2 ottomans place mirrored trays on top for a hard surface. 5th ~ Replace the side tables bet. the wing back chairs & on each end of the couch with a chunkier piece think steamer trunk, or stacked hat boxes. 6th ~ Spray paint the lamps one solid color then add the mercury glass spray on top & replace the lamp shades for white ones.THE DINING ROOM...1st ~ Replace the picture & metallic scones(?) w/ 2 long ( 4 - 6 feet) but short width ledges that have a raised edge. Paint them black so they pop off the wall. Place decorative plates, artwork whatever you want. 2nd ~ Paint the base of the table & chairs white, keep the wood top might want to refinish it w/ a cherry stain to bring out the wood more. 3rd ~ Replace the rugs w/ bigger ones. One for the living room & one for the dining room. Keep them the same color. Ok, that's what I got for suggestions. Take what works for you. Leave the rest. Hope this helps.

It's what makes you happy that counts.

While i like the room,i agree with there are too many flowers, and also take down all those extra sconces, and the 1/2 wreath over the pictures. The pictures are enough, they don't need to be embellished. Also take the plastic off the lamp shades.I'd also put a larger rug in front of the couch..I love your window treatment, and the colors you used.Remember, less is more.

Would remove the wreath, shelves, etc. and keep only the pics. Suggest they are hung a bit too high. If possible, try to get a larger area rug to help define the whole space - one with a traditional pattern to suit your style.
