First thing I would do is caulk that area where the roof meets house. If there is a gutter there, I would make sure the gutters clean and the edge touching house is caulked and draining properly.

If that doesn't do it, call the roofer.

  • When I was younger and more able bodied, I used to hop up on the roof with a hose and figured it out that way. Now I call a roofer . . .

    Sharon has the right idea!

A roofer will likely have to come, and go thru the attic, to see where the leak is truly coming from. Be careful, and get a roofer that is already insured, and you know him, to do a good job. Never be alone, but have someone there with you, when he comes. Just pure wisdom, ok? J.

ONE MORE FACTOR, as you check the shingles, if they are wet, from past rains, then snow, or a back up from rain or overloaded rain, may back up and get into the shingles. Check this carefully., and look for a book, on roofing, and look for leaks, and what to look for. This may give you lots of info., too.J.

When calling for a roofer, ask if they are licensed by the city where you live. If they are licensed, they have to be insured. Don't take chances, if something goes wrong, you will be the one who has to pay out $$$$ for injuries etc. Or the roofer could sue you! When they come to your house, ask to see his license. If he does not have a copy with him, don't use him.

It's probably at the seam that joins the porch roof to the house roof. Or if you have a chimney it's often around the flashing.
