I wanted a welcome sign for my covered entry that matched the color of the house. Unicorn spit to the rescue!
I always buy pieces of wood at garage sales - So many possibilities run thru my mind. So here was a piece that I sanded down to get to clean wood. I used a hand sander. I spritzed the wood with some filtered water first and then brushed my hand across the board to spread out the water.
Next I grabbed Jay Hawk Rock Chalk sparkle unicorn spit and applied by dry rubbing it all over the wood with a lint free towel.
Next I took some Waverly chalk paint from WalMart in the color Ocean and painted the sides of the wood.
The board with the Jay Hawk US was showing the wood grain very orange. I wasn't sure I liked this so I took some Patina Peacock sparkle spit and lightly painted the entire board.
This created the most interesting shade of blue/green. That's the awesome thing about unicorn spit - you never know what you're going to end up with but it's always beautiful!
Next I took some Zia Teal and a butterfly stencil and put a butterfly in each corner of the board.
I didn't think the butterfly stood out enough so I started outlining and filling in spots with Finchi Fran gold sparkle spit. It is a gorgeous color!
I didn't get a good picture of the in process outlining etc but you can see here where I ended up. I added some Patina Peacock in there as well. Just trying to give the butterfly some "oomph" if that makes sense. I am no artist by any means so you can see these aren't perfect.
Then I laid out my stencils to say "Welcome" and used the Finchi Fran gold to start the letters. I sprinkled turquoise glitter all over the letters while they were still wet and you can see how pretty the blue green is.
I sealed it with 2 coats of spar urethane and decided it needed some more bling. I glued clear craft stones from JoAnn Fabric all around each butterfly with E6000 glue.
I added a picture hanger to the back and hung it outside my door. I love it! Who knew I could be so crafty and have so much fun making things for my house and for friends and family?
