Put up shelves at an appropriate height for him to reach and possibly more above it for other uses. To be able to keep them on the shelves, perhaps put quarter round on the front edge and two sides. As he grows, you can put that shelf up one shelf and store other toys or whatever on the lower shelf.
There was an idea the other day for a book shelf made from guttering. You could cut the white gutter to the length (s) needed, put on end caps, ( would need 2 for each shelf) attach to wall staggered or one above another. The cars would fit in the gutter for display.
What you want to make is a shadowbox with grids. See if these links help you out. My dad did something similar for my brother's matchbox cars back in the 60's.
