First start by purging the closet, drawers and all the boxes and if your have not used it in a year then it's time to let go and donate those things. In the closet try using dollar pouches for the closet to line the walls to store things in and totes to stack inside the closet and above storage bins and under the bed storage to bring the bedroom back to being used as a bedroom and office space too.

I store my Christmas stuff in large plastic tubs that are red on the bottom with a green lid. Had about 9 boxes until I started downsizing and giving things away.

  • Ha! You should see my garage! Well, Christmas is fast approaching. This year go through all your stuff and pare it down and get rid of what you no longer care for or use - donate those items to a needy family, church or retirement home. Then package up carefully so it takes less space. Go through all your closets, garage, storage in your home and see how and where you can relocate your items yet have access when you need them. Chances are you will make a huge mess as cleaning out one area always begets another, but in the end all the work will be worth it to be tidy, organized and happy.

I will soon be giving away all my extra Christmas decorations to family members who WANT them. I have green under-the- bed totes on wheels with red lids . They are great because they hold a lot, keep the dust away from under the bed and protect the ornaments. The office can be a simple desk. Keep office supplies and files in a chest, or the square cube ottomans, get rid of extras and doubles. You don't need 200 pens, they dry out anyway. You can donate supplies and extra Christmas items to a neighbourhood school or Church.

Buy yourself a good scanner and keep digital copies of warranties and manuals (they are not all available for free online). Start keeping digital copies of pictures (with lots of back-ups!), or turn them into photo books. They are thinner than albums. Go paperless with your bills.

p.s. Although it is good to donate your Christmas stuff before Christmas, another good time is after Christmas. I remember taking the tree down and donating everything, outdoor lights included. It saved me putting it all away, and the local thrift store had a huge after Christmas sale.

A chest of drawers in the closet will hide many of the office supplies and still have them handy for when you are working in there, If it would fit you could even put a file cabinet in there. Christmas stuff could go in bins in the closet shelves or stacked on left over floor space. Over the door shoe storage would hold all the extra supplies you have like extra pens and pencils, staplers and staples, envelopes, any cords, chargers, etc. that aren't daily used. You could also put up shelving and make a drape of attractive sheets to cover the shelves from sight. You could put bins and boxes of Christmas stuff on the shelves.
