My cabinet doors need a makeover something awful ! They were painted BRIGHT RED when we first moved in, and we simply gave them a clean coat of a color resembling 'latte" to avoid looking at that glaringly gross red ! As with every UPCYCLER, who relies on product sales for income; our homes often get pushed to the back burner. It's time to light this fire and get cooking ! This demo is on a "practice" plywood cut, but I love the results, can't wait to share this technique with you !
I started out with a plywood cut left over from another project....please ignore the blue paint and brush, that was from something else, just {oops} got it in the shot ! ..... If you'd like to practice this technique; any scrap wood will work, OR.... check your local hardware or Home Depot for scraps, or precut pieces...they are inexpensive and sometimes FREE....don't be afraid to ask !!
I gathered some ingredients that I thought might give me the effect I was going for....OF COURSE, my UNiCORN SPiT !!! , some mica dust in browns, copper and golds {you can mix your dusts to get custom colors too},  some TRUE FLOW {which is the same as FLOTROL}.
and...yes.....Hydrogen Peroxide ! there have been several videos done using peroxide on projects, so I thought I might give it a try.
I mixed mica dust into the TRUE FLOW to create a metallic pallet of colors ! .... small containers from the dollar store are excellent for this type of MAD SCIENTIST experimental mixing !
It's no secret !! ......2 browns and a gorgeous gray SPiT will be available soon ...But...in the meantime..... we can make our own and customize the shades using MIDNIGHT BLACKNESS, WHITE NING, LEMON KISS AND PHOENIX FIRE !.....I suggest playing a bit with your ratios to achieve the shades you desire. For best results, begin with a base of MIDNIGHT BLACKNESS and add a bit of each color to it. HINT:  when mixing UNiCORN SPiT, remember , you are combining several concentrated colors, so don't forget to dilute 10-20%.
Oh, how I love copper metallic !!! ....I began with a coat of copper metallic paint, I had stashed in my paint cabinet. When I actually do the doors, I will likely choose a paint brand with more SUBSTANCE !! ....but for now, the color is what matters .
Using a few syringes, I squirted my CUSTOM SPiT colors over the board, as well as my mica and true flow mixtures !
Oh, it needed a lighter contrasting color for sure......so, I made one !!! .... WHITE NING, LEMON KISS, a bit of true flow and some gold mica dust {don't forget to add water}......
Much better !!! ...I am happy with the gold contrast against all the brown hues !
I then lightly sprayed a mixture of 50% water and 50% peroxide {light mist is all you need for now}. Using a dollar store trash bad, I covered the piece, and smoothed all the colors out with my hands.{You can also brush over the bag with a paint brush to make sure all your edges are covered}.
the plastic was carefully removed to reveal a work of art. NOW, ......spray your water/peroxide mixture a little heavier over the piece to allow the liquid to sort of RUN over your piece.... see the veining it's beginning to create ?
The peroxide, as it begins to dry, bubbles a bit, and sort of cracks over the layers of SPiT and mica mixtures, allowing the base color to peek through all that texture !
ALLOW TO COMPLETELY DRY !!! ....Due to the multiple layers, this may take an hour or more.  When dry, seal with an oil based sealer such as polyurethane ...you choose, gloss, or a more subtle satin...either looks amazing. I recommend a light sanding between 2-3  coats of polyurethane. This is gloss, because I love all things SHINY ! .....The pictures just don't do this technique the justice it deserves.... my plywood has been transformed into a slab of polished stone !!! ......OH.....cabinet doors....get ready !!!!

Have you ever tried adding the mica directly to the unicorn SPiT? I’m wanting to try that but wondered if you have! I have amassed a huge collection of jacquard pearl-ex, the ranger perfect pearls and then my favorite finnabair mica powders. Just curious if you’ve ever added any other mediums to the unicorn spit? Just wanted to pick your unicorn brain!
