How to install a Clothes Rod for my closet?

there are round rod holders in the hardware store that attach to each side of the closet. cut a pole to fit. simple fix.

I had the same dilemma. I bought the rod and fittings at Home Depot. Depending on the length of the rod, you'll need a support at each end, as well as perhaps one in the middle. My closet is about 8 feet wide, so I opted for 4 supports, because it is jammed with winter coats. I bought the kind of brackets that are flat on top to hold a shelf, and I bought the ready-made white shelving, too.

You have to make sure that the rod supports are all screwed firmly, with at least two-inch screws, into the wooden studs, so you may need a studfinder. I bought a chrome rod that you cut to size with a hacksaw, but there are adjustable, telescoping rods available, too. If you're not handy with tools (I'm not), get someone who is to help you. You don't need all your stuff to come crashing down some winter day.

I like to use 1 1/2 " heavy wall steel pipe and I take two pieces of 2X4 long enough to nail into wall studs horizontally. Use a stud finder. Cut to needed length. I then decide how far away from the back wall to mount the rod. Remember winter clothes tend to be wider and might need an extra couple of inches to hang well. I use a hole cutter that works with my drill to accommodate the pipe size. Cut the holes just below the top edge of the support boards and then on one of those boards cut the width of your pipe from the shallow side. Your pipe needs to be cut the full length of the closet walls minus 1/4". Mount side supports holes to top of boards and at two inches under any existing shelving in closet. Place one end of rod in board with just the hole and slide the other end down into the open ended hole. If your closet is tall enough you can piggy back a hanging spare rod from this extra sturdy pipe. That way you can still have room for longer coats and plenty of room for shorter jackets and snow pants, ski outfits, etc. Hope this helps.

I used the Lido heavy duty chrome closet rod flanges, and the 1-5/16" heavy duty chrome closet rod. This was because there was already a wooden crosspiece attached to the wall at each end of the closet, and I attached the pole sockets/flanges to that. For the two center supports, I used the Lido heavy duty shelf and rod bracket. I just looked, and Home Depot has all the closet and shelf bracket supplies in their online catalog.
