Quick way is to go with larger plants, but it's not super cost effective unless you buy the plants at the end of their growing season. Planting perennials is cost effective as are shrubs since you don't have to replant them yearly. Bulbs combined with the perennials can give you a lot of pop for your money.

I personally like daylilies since they are hard to kill and come in lots of varities and spread. Combine these with Oriental lilies or irises and other plants that bloom throughout the spring and summer and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Trim bushes, plant some flowers for color, cover the garden with fresh mulch (not red, please - natural or dark), cut the grass and reseed any bare patches. Also call 2-3 nursery or landscaping services. Explain up front that you want to make it look better but don't have a lot to spend. Figure out a budget and see how they respond. You might find that hiring someone will make sense - especially if bushes are a real mess and need to come out. If you're doing this to sell a house, it's totally worth it. You can have the professional include smaller plants that cost less and than you usually can't find on your own. (or ask about that) A buyer will see the new landscape and realize you've done the work. I know when we were looking for a house, if the outside was messy we didn't even bother to look inside. We figured if the outside was a mess the inside would be worse. If you end up with 2-3 bids that are too high, just say you're sorry but it's out of your budget (you know, that one you gave them in the beginning.) You still might be able to use a few of their ideas but it would be unethical to just copy it all. We just had ours done again (been here since 1972) The bushes were way overgrown and it was just a mess. Now it looks nice and we just added a few pops of flowering annuals around the house this summer to dress it up. Good luck!

Make sure all plants and shrubs are neat and trimmed. Add a few pops of color with bright annuals or fall mums in pots that you can place out at various spots. Spiff up your mailbox with new paint or decorations.

The quickest way is to add homemade items. I also added a spray painted watering bucket and hung it on a garden hook at an angle. I hung some beads from the spout to look like water trickling from the spout.
