If you love jute decor and creating beautiful crafts from jute then you are going to be as excited as I am about my latest project. I love jute placemats and chargers – they are perfect decor elements for any tablescape setting or decorative element around your home. Purchasing jute placemats or chargers can be costly; I’ve seen them for as much as over fifty dollars each! Why spend that kind of money when you can make them yourself and get the design and patterns you love?

I started with some jute cord– this particular jute measures 7mm x 9 yds. It’s a wider version than most and perfect for a placemat. You will need at least one spool of it depending on the desired size of your placemat or charger.
I’ve created so many beautiful jute decor elements for my home and love each and every one of them. I knew my next jute project would be placemats. I only made the one for now but am going to make a set of six for my dining room table. All you need is a glue gun and thread to get started.

Oh, and be prepared to use lots of glue gun glue too – I always use the longer sticks and used about six to make this jute placemat.

I wanted to add some pops of color to my jute placemat and thought the look of sewing thread would add the perfect touch. I doubled up the thread and began adding batches of it around the jute. You can do this before you begin making your placemat or while you are making it. You can use a single thread but it goes faster when you double it.
Start off by making your jute circle nice and tight. You can also add some thread to the center too.
Use as much glue as you can on the back. It acts as extra padding too which is awesome. You can also add some material to the back when you are done if you want a more finished look. I didn’t add any backing but I always can if I choose to later.
You can see it starting to come together – I love the way the thread adds small pops of color.
As you are applying the glue, be sure to use a knife or a flat edge tool and keep each piece of jute flat as you go along.
You can decide how large of a placemat you want – I like mine on the larger size and measured out at 15×15.
I am so thrilled with the results. There are so many ways you can use this jute placemat to decorate with as well. I love using it with some of my Fall Decor – it works great with Autumn colors.
It looks so pretty with some Autumn elements like the one pictured below. I think I might leave it like this for some beautiful Fall elements in my home.
It looks so beautiful with a place setting as well.
I love the black thread I used to end off this placemat with some eye-catching element – it really finished it off nicely.
The threading really makes a huge difference in this jute centerpiece. You can use embroidery thread too. There’s something so raw and natural about jute – I think that’s what attracts me to it. Everything I’ve made with jute has been so much fun. Be sure to check out all of my jute projects too!

Could you use embroidery thread instead of regular thread or is it too thick? Also, did you wrap the outer edge in thread before you glue it in place?
