Do you have plants in the house?

I recently had some fruit flies and I made a solution of apple cider vinegar and one drop of dawn dish soap in a glass and placed them around the home and the problem resolved itself in about 4-5 days! I noticed the flies attracted to it inmediately! I would also make sure you don't have any old fruit or veggies anywhere!! Good luck!!

Me too! I used a remedy I found online. Fashion, from a sheet of typing paper, a cone with a very small opening at the bottom, but broad opening at the top. In a bottle (I used a Snapple bottle), place some bits of (preferably overripe) fruit. Insert the pointed end of the cone and place the bottle/cone wherever you see the most fruit flies. Leave undisturbed overnight. When the bottle seems full of flies, cover cone and bottle quickly with a plastic bag and take the whole works outside before removing the cone (and letting the flies fly away). Repeat as needed, using the same bottle/cone.

I get fruit flies this time of year every year. Ugghh! After having checked all the likely suspects (any fruit/veggies not in fridge, any food stuffs in the garbage can, etc) I was told to take like a pill bottle and put about 3 tbsp of red wine vinegar and a couple drops dish soap in and swish around. Then take a biggie and snip off one of the corners just a bit. Put the baggie over the container and use a rubber band to get/keep it in place. You want the baggie to look like a funnel down into the pill bottle. You want the snipped baggie opening to be 1/2" ish above the vinegar mixture. The idea being that the flies will go down through the hole in the baggie to get at the vinegar solution and not be able to get back out again.

Good Morning Pat :) The fastest NATURAL way to get rid of them is to drown them with vinegar . LOL . Honestly! They are attracted to the odor, climb into the container you've put it in so they can have some and then the weight of the drop or two of dish soap you put into the vinegar will weight down their tiny wings and they can't get out. My daughter tried vinegar with AND without the few drops or soap gently stirred into the vinegar and the mixture of vinegar and soap worked wonderfully for her. Good Luck Pat! and thank you for asking HOMETALK for answers :)

Bananas are a big problem. Do you have them?

  • Jeanne Martin Jeanne Martin on Sep 22, 2017

I put a little apple cider vinegar with a couple drops of Dawn and set it on my counter. Works great! I don't cover it. I finally figured out mine are coming from my kitchen drains. I just keep plugs over them when not using which has cut down tremendously how many there are. I think mine are drain flies or something like that. Now I have to figure out how to kill/stop where they are coming from in the dprain.

Any fresh fruit or vegetables you bring in the house from the garden, veggie stand, a friend, or the produce dept. at your local store will possibly bring them in, that is why they need to be washed immediately after bringing them in the house. My mom left a tomato from my garden on her counter with her bananas and oranges and wham! She is inundated. I found that the potatoes she keeps in the closet have invited them into that closet. I purchased the same bait bottle that our local HyVee store uses in their produce department. They also like to congregate in the sinks because of the water that stays in the pipes. You may also want to check your houseplants to make sure they aren't making homes there. I know it sounds gross, but hang fly strips where they are the worst, they really do help catch a lot of them and it will take less time to get them under control. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi Pat, hope this helps you out.

In a small bowl, mix a half cup of warm water plus two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of sugar, and about six drops of liquid dish soap. Gnats will be lured in by the sugary mixture, but once they dip in for a drink, the sticky dish soap will trap them.
