I have a lot of eggs. How do you know when to throw them away?

I see dates on the cartons but I was told not to go by that because it is when they should be out of the store.

    Just fill a bowl with cold water and place your eggs in the bowl. If they sink to the bottom and lay flat on their sides, they're very fresh. If they're a few weeks old but still good to eat, they'll stand on one end at the bottom of the bowl. If they float to the surface, they're no longer fresh enough to

    Put an egg in a bowl of cold water. If it floats, throw it away.

    Get a pot, fill it half way with cool water. Place eggs into the pot. The ones that float right to the top will be the oldest. Because the shells are porous, air can get through the shell. The oldest have the most air in them, so they float.

    Supposedly you can use them safely 4-5 weeks past "sell-by" date.

    Former retail grocery store employee. The date is correct. Throw them out. If the the date says BEST BY you have time. With eggs you don't.

    Eggs should last a month or so. Fresh eggs are difficult to make into hard boiled eggs so when mine are a couple of weeks old I make egg salad!
