Make a coat closet into a pantry - see below

Any ideas for changing a coat closet into a pantry that's doorway is only 19 inches wide and the inside width is about 26 inches; a deep closet. Cannot find a set of freestanding shelves that will fit so I need to be creative about how to do this, in order to get to the canned foods, etc., that I need.

  • Just build shelves to suit your needs. An easy fix is install brackets from any hardware store or home improvement store and have pieces of wood cut to the appropriate size. Screw to brackets and done. If you want a more high end look, paint or stain before installing.

wr used the white wire shelving. Worked out great.

Thank you, but as someone else suggested same (above), 'considered this and it won't work. I don't want to mar my closet sides with anything so I need "free-standing" set of shelves so it can be easily removed.

Love the idea above, especially to stain the shelves for a high end look! Now I want to do the same!

Look on line at easy closet. The can customize shelving.

Thank you, but I don't want the expense; just need suggestions for a set of "free-standing" shelves that can be removed. I would though, consider stacking bins 11" of wood or hard type if I could only find them somewhere. Some places have the 11" folding fabric type but that won't do in my case.

Install strips of wood onto both side walls and use these to hold shelves. Deep pantries make it difficult to see/retrieve items at the back. You might also find room for broom storage.

Thank you, but I don't want to put anything on sides of closet or mar the walls. My basement shelves are like you suggest but do not want this on my first floor closet. That is why I'm looking for free-standing type.
