What kind of tile is that
1. Extend the tile surround up another Two Rows with some really attractive Tiles, and then , If you can still get hold of original tiles, you could put a Row of those on top. If not a row of Steel looking tiles. Paint or Stain the Shelf Black.
2. Apply Stick on Tiles.
3. Add Tall tiles above existing. Contrast - Copper look?
4. Mirror Tiles
5. Piece of Carved Wood in between Tiles and Shelf.
I'd change out the tiles for sure, maybe natural stone all the way up the wall with a thick block of natural barn wood for a new mantle . OR you could visit your local salvage store for a vintage wood mantle. There's always tin tiles that are easy to apply. Best of luck.
Diana Deiley...the natural barn wood or the vintage / antique mantle are great
the stone think is a bit dated though
Starting with the fireplace insert itself. Here is what I did to our outdated colors (we had gold trim and a cherry looking wood detail) We taped off everything and spray painted the gold trim a gun metal metallic color. Stained the wooden parts in an almost black shade.
Now for the tiles. If you want something quick and dirty I've heard of people just retiling over existing tile. That would be easier than removing what is already there. Otherwise remove and re-tile. You can even get peel and stick tiles that are easy to work with or the permanent kind that need to be grouted. Large rectangular tiles in a vertical setup are all the rage these days but require cutting so unless you can do that yourself you may need to hire someone(?) I would go with a dark or medium grey tile.
You could leave those tiles and do a pallet wood surround to the ceiling and whitewash it grays to go with the tiles, or if its an electric go right up to the fireplace..... https://i.pinimg.com/736x/7e/f1/59/7ef159534f51b3c20fc1a072a3dfae9c--wood-fireplace-surrounds-reclaimed-wood-fireplace.jpg
