Queen bed small guest room - how should I style modern country?

Julie Medved
by Julie Medved
The only way we could fit it in was next to wall and door and facing out the window
I was thinking of a shelf above the bedhead to put a lamp and a large painting on the blank wall. Keen for ideas on the lampshade too. There is no room for any other furniture.

Coloured Shiplap Wallpaper behind bed. Use one of the colours in wallpaper for other walls. Choose another of the colours as Bedding and Lampshade.

I love the bed! Position the bed off center from the largest wall leaving enough room for a small round end table in the corner. A large oval mirror on the short wall will reflect light. A linen curtain hung 4" from the ceiling to the floor over the window will give height to the room. Layer your bedding to include an old country quilt and several pillows. Wooden shelving will bring in the country feel you're looking for. Have fun. Best of luck.

Thanks Diana, I have placed a country quilt on it, need some new cushions and reject shop have some cheap floating shelves. So the mirror over the bed and shelves along the side of the bed? I can't position the bed off centre as it blocks the door. Also I have 3 small matching paintings should I put them on the shelves or on the wall opposite the bed?

The bed really needs to be placed in front of the window in order to give the room a focal point as you enter. Here's a photo that will help you with your project āœ…

The two above pictures you replyed about are from a professional photo shopped designe!

Gerberryful my photos are at the top

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 24, 2017

@Barb, unfortunately I can't fit the bed in the centre of the window because it blocks the doorway so I can't close the door. I could put it to the left of the window or across the window. Both looked odd, but what do you suggest?( The bed is too big for the room but the only one we have and we don't have it in our budget to get another bed at the moment.)

A pocket door, or barn door slider would take care of that one issue. Otherwise Iwoud use wall mounted reading light(s) (hide the cords please), and floating small shelves on either side of the bed. One other thing that might help is to use risers on the bed frame legs to raise the bed higher making lots of storage space under the bed since there is no room for a chest. Is there a closet? If not, just a couple hooks would be handy...even on the sliding door. Fun!

My photos are at the top. Below is the layout.

Would it work if you put the headboard on the right wall, as you enter the room.?Put small nightstand on window side. Then put a fold down one on door side. This way it could be flipped up or down when not in use.

  • Deeds Deeds on Sep 24, 2017

Would it work if you made it a day bed? Turn the bed around so that the pretty wrought iron bedhead becomes the 'armrest'. A bolster and lots of cushions up against the wall.

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 24, 2017

I tried it but the bedhead is a little too high for an armrest. Once I get some more pillows and white curtains. I will post up and you can let me know what you thinkšŸ‘Œ

Here's another thought. Since the door-opening is what's preventing from centering the bed under the window (which I think would look best), how about replacing your swinging-door with one of those folding-panel doors? There are some very nice-looking ones available now, and they don't take up any interior bedroom space at all. You can also perceptually reduce the size of the bed by taking off the headboard, and just using heaps of pillows as a pseudo-headboard. I think the suggestion of adding a mirror is a great one, as is using quilty-style bedding.

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

Even with a slider door the bed blocks the doorway unfortunately. I could still do barn slider though but inside the room as it can't fit outside due to other doorways. If I push the bed to the left of the room it just fits in, but is over half of the window. That's why facing the window looks a little better.

Take the headboard off. Sit bed on the frame only. Center it under the window like a daybed. Room for small tables on either side. Possibly room for small dressing table or chest on wall behind door. I think once you get the layout set you can let your imagination run with decorating. Let us see what you come up with!

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

Unfortunately the headboard is all part of the frame and can't be removed. We really need a smaller bed but just trying to get away with what we have for now.

i know everyone seems to be hung up on the layout. No headboard (if possible) would be my first try. BUT you originally asked for, help to make it modern country. I would do a ship lap effect on the big wall oppposite the wall the door opens not. Side tables can be a simple shelf or crate that is hung on the wall. They don't have to sit on the floor. That would be a beginning. Good luck.

Get a smaller mattress. Look on facebook yardsales. They are free most of the time

Since the bed seems to be a big problem, I would look for a sleeper sofa for that room. I have seen sleeper sofas for free on craigslist.com and freecycle.com in my area. Check these sites plus some other sites in your area.....you might get lucky and find what you want for free or very little money. Don't forget about Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat For Humanity, and other thrift shops. It seems that every solution that was mentioned to help you solve your problem wouldn't work with the exception of a mirror or shelves. I know this situation is very frustrating for you. You might ask family and friends if they know of any person who wants to get rid of a sleeper sofa. I wish you only the best in solving this problem. Kudos!

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

It would fit under the window sideways, just not sure my hubby will dismantle again. I agree though I need something smaller like a Sofa bed centred under the window Or on the left wall. The room is all bed at the moment.

  • Cynthia A Cynthia A on Sep 25, 2017

Why not get a different bed frame , you should be able to find one at a second hand store or Habitat for Humanity has retail outlets. Also is it possible to fix the door soo that it opens out instead of in?

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

Yes I might need to get a different bed size and frame. I can't change the door to open out as it is the first room as you walk in through the front door.

  • Bobbi Lively Bobbi Lively on Sep 25, 2017

If you had the funds and ability, I would forgo to current headboard, then create a wooden headboard that was basically a box so it had a shelf on top, but also allowed for a backrest for you and/or pillows. Then you could use the shelf for a small lamp, books and whatevers. 10" would probably be wide enough. You could even have storage on the side. Something like this picture. http://www.ikea.com/ms/media/seorange/20173/20151_beca11a_headboards_PE370712.jpg This one if from IKEA.

Put it under the window, length wise, but not up against the wall. Add to the window sill, to make it deeper, to hold a lamp, cup, book , etc. Or even make a slim 'table' like you can put behind a couch. Make it the same height as the window sill, but maybe the same length as the mattress, so there aren't a bunch of different sight lines. If there isn't enough room to leave the existing curtains, [so they can be used] try cafe style with a tension rod inside the window frame.

Try the mirror idea on the opposite wall and add one to the inside of the door itself. Maybe even the same size mirrors, so it looks pleasing on the inside of the room. Maybe there will be room for a small corner shelf on that same wall?

Use what you have for starters. I just suggested the long rectangle mirrors because they are inexpensive. Mixing up several mirror shapes could look really good too.

On my doors, I can unscrew the door hinges and move the door forward- about an inch over a strip of wood that goes down the center of the door frame. Attach to the other side of the wooden strip and the door will open into your hallway instead of opening into your bedroom. So you can center the bed sideways in front of your window. Is this doable?

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 26, 2017

Sideways into the window would work if I can coax hubby to reassemble the bed again.

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

This is it with the quilt and my two horse sketch cushions. I will place some bigger neutral cushions behind. I can attach a bedside lamp to the head rail. A mirror on the large side wall that is opposite the wall on the side of the bed? 3 small paintings above the bedhead? Or on the wall the bed is against?

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

This is the view walking into the room

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 25, 2017

    Rocking chair? Or no?

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 30, 2017

Ok so my hubby is too busy to reassemble so I worked with what I had. I got a canvas from the reject shop of a vineyard because we live in wine country. I still have to get it up on the wall but it creates depth like a mirror as suggested. I have a country quilt on the bed, bought two ruffled white cushions, put in my rocking chair and a throw I had. Next I will change the curtains and put a soft lambswool rug on the floor. I still have to get a lightshade. I put towels and toiletries on the bed end and a wreath above the bed. Behind the door I placed a chalkboard heart to write welcome and the guests names on. Any other ideas?

  • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Sep 30, 2017

Shabby chic rocking chair with throw and Canadian artist horse sketch cushion and some country decor magazine and regional guide.

Willow tree wreath a friend gave me and two quality ruffled white cushions I purchased to bring out the whites in the quilt.

Vineyard canvas from Reject shop $25 and white towels with toiletries on the bed end.

Chalkboard heart to write "welcome" and guests name on it on back of door.

Modern country sounds confining. Do something classic. A nice bed and bed spread, some pillows and neutral curtains and paint.

    • Julie Medved Julie Medved on Oct 01, 2017

If you look above your comment I have pics of what I have done based on the help from hometalkers. I just have my curtains to change to white, add a neutral rug and I'm done šŸ˜€šŸ‘

With a large bed and a small room you definitely have limited options. I would put the bed next to the window with the headboard on the left wall. Plan on entering the bed from only one side until you can get something smaller. By moving the bed you will be able to add an end table next to the bed and possibly a dresser, bookcase or desk on the wall next to the door. Country styling has a lot do do with the fabrics and other materials (such as wood or straw) that you use.
