I need a temporary closure to my basement stairwell for winter.

My stairwell is open to the first floor. I loose a lot of heat because the basement is still unfinished. The washer and dryer plus storage are there so I still need access. I do not want to put a trap door on the area as it is part of the finished look and is certainly attractive with finished oak. What can I do from Dec. to Mar.?

I'm not sure if this would work, but have you tried hanging or tacking a sheet of plastic or even just a bed sheet to the door frame on the INSIDE of the door? Yuppers... it'll be a pain in your tookus every time you have to move it going back and forth, but if it works??

You can put a tension rod and use a insulated drape

We owed a heavy type (towel material) shower curtain hung by a curtain rod. Keeps it up and the weight of the curtain keeps the cold out.

I'd put in an oak door. Not a trap door. It's not too expensive to have a handy man/carpenter come and install one. The money you save in one year would pay for it. If not, I'd put up a heavy blanket over the opening.
