Imported play sand beach and accessories, water feature, lobster pots, deck chairs, rotting seaweed, and maritime plantings. Just need the sunshine, a rare thing in this years summer in the UK!
The initial idea of the quayside/beach themed garden area was sparked by the raised decked walkway from the high level raised decked patio which the previous owner of the property had constructed.
The early days of creating the look with accessories, fun, practical and in keeping with the theme. I tried to be quirky as well as realistic as possible. Once the dimensions of the actual beach area had been decided upon, firstly, the area was cleared of any unwanted vegetation and debris, a weed inhibiting material was placed over the beach area then several bags of play (pit) sand was tipped onto the material to completely cover it. Play sand MUST be used for this project as any other type e.g. builders sand for mortar or just dug up sand from somewhere, will stain clothes and be coarse underfoot.
More accessorising,I would not suggest taking stones or plants from the seashore, but bits of flotsam and jetsam, like old netting, driftwood, shells are acceptable however the free stuff was augmented by the purchase from my local garden centre of pebbles, play sand and suitable plantings such as Sea Holly (Eringium)Thrift(Armeria) ,House leeks (Sempervivums). The beauty of this type of 'wild' garden is exactly as the word suggests, once it is set up it can be left, within reason to naturalise by itself.
Buoy oh Bouy! Real lobster pots but plastic lobsters! Boat planter adds to the theme as does the deck chair and the gurgling 'rock' water feature
Sand laid, deciding on the positions of the main 'permenent features. 'Ammonite' shell picked up for a song at car boot sale.
Don't get crabby with me George ! George Segal of course
See ya later alligator!
Nice bit of tuna for tea!
Buoy oh Buoy, it's lookin' good.
By a babbling brook! Only trouble is the tinkling sound of the water makes for frequent visits to the John at my age!!!!
