How can I work the clay in my soil. It gets too clunky.

You need to till the clay with soil, compost, and peat moss. Either rototil it or dig it in with a pitchfork and shovel.
We had clay yard too. We hauled in a ton of sand and bought straw and mixed it all together for our garden. We also used paper for mulch in the garden and tilled it into the soil in the fall. A lawn can be done the same way, but it is a lot of work.

I know it seems like plants just won't grow in clay soil, but sometimes they Love it. Roses for example so a lot better in clay than sand!
if you have specific plants that need well drained soil, think about raised beds and pots.
My garden in Dallas (as clayey as it gets) is great except for veggies, which have moved to raised beds.
You can also plant a cover crop like clover or winter rye grass, there are many, then till it under in Spring when you get ready to plant. The more organic matter you can till in, the better your soil will be.
