A solid wood magazine rack with good 'bones' but lacking personality gets a face lift and new life with spray chalk paint and some vintage French book pages!
Recently I started using Rust-oleum's brand of SPRAY chalk paint called "Chalked". I love the smooth, chalky finish and how quickly and easily it's applied. Another great thing about it is being able to get down inside pieces like this easily. No more hands and arms covered with paint while trying to get a brush down in there.
This solid, heavy piece had great lines but lacked character so after dusting it off, it was ready for new life. The paint, like all spray paint does have a strong odor so IF you can, it's best to use it outdoors.
Here is is after one coat. The other great thing about this paint is how FAST it dries. By the time I had finished the first coat, it was dry and ready for the second.
I did a little distressing and waxed with clear wax before getting ready to dress up the panels. (You'll notice the panels aren't fully 'covered' with paint - why waste it since they were going to be covered?)
You could use anything on a project like this but I chose these old book pages from a French school book.
You could use anything for a project like this but I chose to use these old, book pages from a French schoolbook. I tore them into pieces and using Mod Podge, adhered them to the four panels.
I think they fit the 'character' of the piece nicely now with it's new look!
Each side is different, adding even more interest.
There -- that's better!
