I think a peephole is a great security measure so you can see who is outside your door WITHOUT opening the door. They start at about $5.99 and go up and are easily installed. I know that standard door locks can be jimmied, so see about getting a dead bolt lock which cannot be easily opened. The little chain guard is really not a security measure as all. Make sure you check your window locks and sliding glass doors, too as there are safety measures you can take! http://www.wikihow.com/Burglarproof-Your-Doors

Start by putting a dead bolt along with a chain that has a key to get in or out. It's had to explain the keyed chain lock and how it works. The right side of the chain lock needs a long screw to be drilled in about a 1/2 inch, from the side of the lock. Put a wing nut at the bottom of the long screw, to secure it. The screw has to go in at the top and come out the bottom, and secure it. Next put the lock part on the wood frame and secure with screws. The place where you put the lock part in on top, and the chain part goes underneath to lock it. I hope this explanatory. Good Luck!

When I see pictures of apartments with four locks on the door, I wonder what else would make me feel safe. An expensive aid might be having a monitored security system, or cameras that alert you by text if someone comes up to or in the door or window. (Motion activated.) Also costly is an additional steel bolt lock on the other side of the door. If the peep hole is non/existent or too high, I suggest an extra one lower down. If you can't afford cameras outside, try hangin some white twinkly lights with one green light so it looks as if you have a system. Don't forget any back door or window.

The old fashioned big dog recording voice activated by rattling the door still works. Conceal the recorder without muffling the sound.

the new Ring doorbells are pretty cool. You can see and talk to the person at your door without even being home.

Dead bolt, flip lock or door guard like this,,, http://cdn3.volusion.com/zfwan.xszjh/v/vspfiles/photos/CAD2CM-2.jpg?1408954933

I also always change the door handle lock when I move in, you never know who has a key or master to the door. Do it late at night when noone is watching.

In an apartment dead bolt, chain and peep hole are always good to have. Also I would get a diy alarm that you can install that you set that will create an audible sound if opened, you can have a fob so you can turn it off while coming and going. There are many options and they only use a screw or two that are easily patched when moving out............not recommending anyone company over another but Simplisafe is one I am familiar with.
