Layer rocks and crushed oyster shells on the dirt surrounding your plants.
Sprinkle some cayenne pepper in the pot. It will not harm the plants, but will keep the squirrels away.
Sprinkle red hot pepper flakes in the pots. This is the one thing that works well for me. I even did it in my garden.
