Hi Francine. For the bulbs it would wither be spring or fall. It depends on what bulbs you have. Hollyhocks are also best planted spring or fall. Make sure you water the Hollyhocks for a few weeks after planting.

OMG it's not letting me post! Today is my first day on hometalk, and my first reply to a question. I have been trying for an hour to post a reply. I think maybe it was too long. I cut it in half that seem to work

Bulbs can be "forced" indoors (usually started in Oct) in a container of rocks and water no soil necessary! Easy Peasy! Then you can have Amaryllis, Hyacinth , Paper Whites, Crocus etc. blooming in the house at Christmas time! Don't forget to order seed and plant catalogs in late Fall to look at all Winter.

Also check out the onion family members called Allium-purple gladiator, Mediterranean bells, crimson drumsticks.

Hollyhocks(bless their little hearts) I love them too, but they

can be a bummer, because they are biennial, so you plant them one year and they won't bloom until the next year. Plus they are susceptible to many diseases.

Some perennial early bloomers-Lenten Rose, Basket of Gold, May Night Salvia, Calendula.

See if you can grow Passion flower, you'll love it!
