How do I make the white residue stop forming on my sandstone fireplace

My sandstone fireplace was stained from a prior leak. I read somewhere that I could clean it with TSP. The directions on the bottle said spray on and leave it on. It made a gray film on the rock. I scrubbed it with a wire brush and rinsed it with water to no avail. It just keeps coming back. Now what do I do to stop this bloom?
