There are more links if you want to be more specific.
The first step is to get rid of everything you don't use or need. Make piles for Keep, Sell and Donate.....and start going through your things one room at a time. Then, determine what type of storage works best for each room. In the kitchen, bins, baskets and jars work well. In the bedroom, use multi-hangers to help save space in closets, use shoe racks to organize shoes, use dividers on closet shelving and in dresser drawers to help keep things in their place. For the bathroom, again use baskets and bins to store cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc in order. Just take your time and do things one room at a time so it won't be so overwhelming. You can do it!
The first thing to do is to put like things together. If you do that, you can figure out where to keep that item, what kind of storage is necessary and get rid of multiples. Just start wherever. Pick a room. Start. Likely you'll find papers everywhere. Pens. Scissors. etc. Everyone has their particulars that wind up all over the place. If you can't bear to part with stuff, even tho you may have 6 of an item, put it in a box in the garage or shed. Not in the living space. Probably find you never look for any of it. So. Start with like things together. Has always worked for me.

Find a place for everything and keep everything in it's place - that means training yourself to put things away after it's used. That was a hard lesson for me. The second is to learn to throw things away or give them away. Clutter is one of the worst things about not being organized.
Getting Organized
Book by Stephanie Winston
Do one room at a time. Decide what you want to keep in a room, and put the rest in a few large boxes labeled by type of item. Keep a basket in each room for things that go into other rooms and take them there each night. If you haven't used it in 2 years, away it goes to someone who can use it. Try taking pictures of sentimental things and getting rid of the originals. Give away duplicates. Try to use creative storage like hanging on walls, in your attic, under your bed. Be sure to use all your closet, from floor to ceiling. Let yourself feel good about any tiny little step you take, it's overwhelming at first but consider getting organized a gift you give yourself.
