Hi Judy. Hostas are a pretty hardy easy going plant. I find it easiest to divide them in spring when they first start coming up. Fall is a good time too. You just wouldn't want to do it when it is really hot out.
You can or just pull them up and chop them in half. Then replant as desired. They are very hardy and can stand a lot of mutilation. However, I got rid of them because of slugs and planted loriope instead.
If you tie the leaves together to limit damage to the leaves you can dig up and transplant any time you want, but spring when they are first coming up is the easiest. Make sure you water them to keep them moist until the roots have a chance to get established. Hostas are easy to work with and very forgiving. I redid a hosta garden last year and had a few plants I just plopped in pots with the soil I dug them up with and they did fine for three month before I got to the spot they were supposed to be in and they are doing great this year and came back better than the new ones I planted last year.
