Does anyone know of a way to dye/stain a white comforter to off white?

The only way I've ever gotten an 'off white' is to use a light tea stain. Here is an article on it http://www.countryliving.com/diy-crafts/how-to/a421/tea-stained-fabrics-0107/
Although tea stain works, it's not always even....and eventually washes out. Enough tea bags to do a large comforter might cost more than a box of Rit dye. A bit of tan dye (you could test strength on a scrap of similar fabric) might be a better and more permanent solution.
