You will need to remove the rocks and weeds for grass to take. The weeds can choke the grass out especially if it is new grass. You could remove the weeds and leaves the rocks if they aren't so big and put about 3-4" of top soil on them. Otherwise a garden rake should help you remove the rocks.

First kill the weeds off, add top soil and then seed. It will dry out faster than any other area due to the water immeditely draining off.

  • I had this problem when I moved into my current home. We tilled over the entire yard and sifted the dirt to get rid of the rocks. Then dug trenches to lay sprinkler pipe. Then amended the soil, spread seed and topped. A lot of work and the last time I do myself. Can easily be hired out at least to the point where it comes to spreading seed.
