How to make an inexpensive island for kitchen

my brother made a lovely one by using identical dressers back to back, installed tool racks on one end and shelves on the other end, and topped with tile. lots of storage for linens, towels, flatware and cups! Look of deep drawers!

Use a refurbished cabinet, or loved piece of furniture or leave a half wall and cover with a top.

so lucky! I have used pretty much everything as a kitchen island. My favorite was an old early 1900s farm table that I picked up for $10. It appeared to be in really shabby condition, but it was really sturdy. I put locking casters on it so it was counter height, painted it the color I liked, redid the top and put hooks on the side to hand things from. In total it cost me less than $50. Which is really good because I am kind of fickle and I have moved islands in and out of my kitchen on a regular basis. Then we got a larger refrigerator and until we knock out a wall I don't have the space for one.

Depends on your budget and if you want storage in it. You can re-purpose an old dresser, or a salvaged table (put a shelf underneath for basket type storage) add a new, larger top in butcher block or Formica or large scale tile (18X36 etc.) Or you can use base cabinets, check out your local Habitat for Humanity or Salvage store, to get some to recycle.

I made 2 move-able kitchen islands from 2 Expidit (from IKEA but called something else now...search EXPIDIT) cabinets... they are 31in. tall x 31in. wide x 15 1/2in. deep, about $40ea. They have 4 cubbys that are about 13x13x 15 1/2. You can buy the accessory castor set for them if you want them to roll around.

IKEA has accessories to fit the cubbys, a door set, a 2 drawer set, baskets, plastic bins ranging from $14 to $30. I found a large scale ceramic tile 16in X32in to fit on the top for easy cleaning. We bought 2 for the kitchen, 2 as bedside tables, one in the office (hung using the special wall bracket from IDEA) and one in my sewing room, also hung. They are very sturdy and look good... and most of all affordable. You can shop IKEA online if there is not one in your area... but the stuff weighs a lot and the shipping may be too much.
