There are black almost fabric types of weed barrier.....the weeds in my yard grow right thru them .put that down ot the black plastic "mulch film" i have had better luck with the plastic it's 4 ft. Wide and a few hundred feet long. A 4 ft wide strip of plastic 4 ft wide of grass. Well, I get wood chips from the organic waste pile my city keeps. Forinbetween rows. They will break down and feed the trees.

    Dfm is right!

Landscaping fabric comes in different thickness and widths of rolls. The cheaper stuff is like thin dryer sheets. The better quality stuff is more like thick plastic contracter bags. (While thick plastic will also work for weed control, it does not allow water drainage the way landscaping fabric does.)

Also the more gaps in the pieces of landscaping fabric underlay the more chances the weeds have to get through, so go for the widest width available, and overlap the pieces where they join.

Mulch alone will not prevent weeds from coming through. It is necessary to put down an underlayer before the mulch goes on top. Even with this underlayer, sometimes it still requires spot application of weed killer especially in the border areas.

Take it all off and put down Weed Suppressant membrane and then the mulch.......

No matter what type of mulch you put down, weeds will eventually grow through (whether they are windblown, dropped by birds, or even in the mulch itself). The best thing to do is pull them immediately when sprouts are seen. The best way to help prolong weeds growing through mulch is to place a weed barrier, overlapping it before placing the mulch.

You will always have some weeds that need pulling - making sure you get the roots. Mulch and weed barriers keep most of the weeds away but not all.

Try and go as deep as you can with weed block and plastic. then mulch thick. It makes it easier to pull them because as everyone has said no matter what weedblock they still grow. Mulch is loose so they are much easier to pull.
