What type flooring and what color for a kitchen & den combo.

The flooring... nice wood floors, keep them, refinish if needed, wood floors are in! Tear up the old carpet, add new if you want or love the wood floors. Scatter rugs for color or add a rug of color or patterned under your furniture to make the room "pop". Use a degreaser on your cabinets, let dry thoroughly, then paint or stain. Paneling on the walls? You mentioned knotty pine. I am very partial to knotty pine and it's warm character And love as is. What your have is a treasure, as it is expensive now. But, if you must....Clean and let dry. Paint a lighter color, of choice or do a white-wash for a homey streak effect. Steps into kitchen or den....paint wears after time. Consider staining or covering steps with rug stair covers for floor protection and added color. I hope you have displayed your family pictures, the den would be a perfect place for those. I used to clean everything in the kitchen with Spic n Span (powder form). It's a great grease cutter. It's really hard to find, but I got a box off of Amazon for around $10. It's worth every penny. HOT, HOT water with a cup of Spic n Span. If they're really bad, use extra fine steel wool to scrub with. A clean wet towel for a final wipe down and then dry with another towel. If it's really thick, you may have to repeat.

Start by cleaning the cabinets with Murphy's oil soap, follow the directions on the bottle. This will take any grease and grime off, and leave a nice shine. If you want, you can protect the cabinets with Wilbert's lemon oil, that also will leave a nice shine. The oil soap is for washing, and the lemon oil is for protection. Murphy's oil soap can be use by itself, see if you like the finish without the lemon oil. Painting a color would depend on the color of your appliances. Are they white? Black? Stainless or a combination? Next measure the room, this will determine the amount of paint you need. Give the measurements to the paint department, and someone will help you with that. Buy HIGH-GLOSS, this you can wash with a little dish soap and a rag, to clean the walls if you get spots. Also buy paint tape, ask also how this is used. The cabinets can be cleaned with a product called Cabinet magic available at Home Depot in the cleaning aisle.As for painting the knotty pine,clean,use a good primer allow to dry,then give the walls two coats of paint again allowing to dry in-between.As for color that is personal taste
