Best time to prune Rose of Sharon in New England?

We have 3 very large Rose of Sharon bushes (about 10 ft. tell) and would like to cut them back to about 6 feet. They are spreading too wide. When is the best time to cut them back and should we tie them together so they grow taller without spreading wider? Thanks

any time but the spring, because they bloom on new growth...and you 'can' tie them, but I would trim them, and then see if they straighten up on their own.
