Frost won't hurt a small tree, but winter weather and wind may. We put tomato cages around our new small trees and left them for 3 or 4 years. Also, in winter we put bubble wrap around the tomato cages to help protect the trees. It also builds the heat a little more on sunny days in winter. Be sure to water trees on days the water will not freeze. New trees need water in winter also. Leave the wrap on the trees year round with the top open to form a mini green house and give them longer growing seasons in fall and spring. When our trees reached over 6 feet tall we removed the cages and put up 3 supports using pieces of old rubber hose where the support wires connected around the trunk of the tree to keep from damaging the tree in harsh wind. We learned the trick about wrap around the tomato cages for small trees from a farmer in Iowa.
1. If it's a citrus or tropical, mulch well without choking and cover with either a frost blanket from one of the big box stores, or I use old blankets. 2. If it's a native, mulching is all that's needed unless a really hard freeze it predicted. Then I cover mine the way I do tropical trees. Be aware that after the freeze they need to be uncovered.
