Our dogs have been "skunked" more times than I care to remember. The best thing to do is soak the animal in vinegar, protecting their eyes, of course, and let it stay for five minutes if you can. Next wash with mild pet shampoo and rinse well. Usually works for me with one application of the vinegar, but occasionally it has taken two.

I went to the vet to get the shampoo, still took two shampoos. Had two dogs do that to me - one was a short hair, the other dog was a husky/pyrenees mix. Tomato juice made it tolerable for the night.

Bathe them in tomato juice. You will need many large gallon cans of it in a small round tub and really saturate them with it.

  • Give them a bath! I use vinegar and then a doggie conditioner.

Get hydrogen peroxide, and dawn regular (blue) dish soap, and baking soda , make a thick paste with the soda and peroxide a little bit of dawn. After use dawn to bathe, (dawn is used to remove oil from wildlife as it cuts through. Skunk spray is oily. )cover the dog and work into coat very well. Let sit until dry. Wash off and repeat as necessary. My Sadie got nailed early one morning and it took two rounds to get to minimal order, the face is tough. She is a Jack Russel / chihuahua mix , short haired which makes it easier but this is much better than tomato juice and doesn’t leave you with a pink dog. 😁

it is work and requires patience but it does work well. Regreatfully dogs can hold a grudge against skunks and porkypines and go after them any time they come across them. Check your yard or property a well as possible when letting them loose. They are mostly nocturnal and you look for the white. Beware of rabies especially if it’s daytime. 🐶🌴

We used to put them in one of those big steel wash tubs outside and pour a few of those big 2 qt. cans of tomato juice over them, let sit a bit, rinse, then shampoo.
